Description

From following the path to finding a life that fits

For much of Paraag Amin’s life, the route ahead appeared clear. Work hard, achieve academically, build a successful career and keep moving towards the next goal. It took him from a childhood shaped by high expectations into investment banking, leadership and the C-suite.

On paper, the plan worked. Internally, however, each achievement brought less of the joy or fulfilment he expected. Paraag had become so focused on reaching the next milestone that he had forgotten to experience the journey.

Growing up too soon

Paraag describes himself as someone who was “never a child”. Mature beyond his years, he felt responsible for setting an example and learned to control rather than express his emotions. Growing up in South London and attending school in Kent, he also felt visibly different and believed he had to work harder than everyone else simply to reach the same level.

That determination produced academic and sporting success, but it also encouraged Paraag to become the person he thought others would accept. The pattern followed him into university, work and relationships, leaving him with the difficult task of finding his way back to himself.

The promise and price of investment banking

Paraag had set his sights on banking from a young age. His early career brought opportunity, money and experiences that once seemed glamorous, but it also brought punishing hours and a culture in which work could consume almost everything else.

He and Ian explore the idea that workaholism is a socially acceptable escape: “I have to work” is rarely questioned, even when work is being used to avoid relationships, emotions or deeper questions about identity.

A wake-up call on his 40th birthday

The turning point arrived when Paraag spent his 40th birthday in A&E with dangerously high blood sugar after years of stress and ignoring what his body was telling him. It forced him to reconsider not only his career but the life he had built around it.

He began asking whether that life still suited the person he had become. His reflection will resonate with anyone who reaches their forties and realises they may still be living according to choices made in their teens or twenties.

Freedom, structure and living without masks

Today, Paraag places freedom, peace, kindness and connection above conventional measures of success. For him, freedom means having choices—but it does not mean living without structure. Simple routines create the space to experience life without being ruled by endless goals or expectations.

The conversation moves into identity, integrity and the exhaustion of wearing different masks for different people. Paraag explains why becoming the same person in every setting has helped him live more truthfully and with greater peace.

Ian and Paraag also discuss AI and a world in which technology can make it easier to withdraw from human contact. Paraag’s challenge is to retain our humanity: to keep talking, feeling, connecting and supporting one another while the world of work changes around us.
